Carapelli Olive Oil has been making olive oil since 1893 and was the first producer to promote bottled extra virgin olive oil in Italy. Carapelli Extra Virgin Olive Oil continues to reign as Italy’s #1 Extra Virgin Olive Oil today.
Carapelli Extra Virgin Olive Oils includes three varieties:
- Premium 100% Italian – made solely from the first cold pressing of the finest 100% Italian olives with an intense, robust flavor and aroma
- Il Numerato – a supremely smooth and low acidity oil that is a result of a delicate cold pressing of olives
- Organic – Obtained only from organically grown olives and produced according to organic farming standards; certified USDA organic
I had a chance to review Carapelli Premium 100% Italian Extra Virgin Olive Oil and perform a standard olive oil tasting using the four S’s – Swirl, Sniff, Slurp and Swallow. In addition to the taste test, I cooked a simple pasta & vegetable dish using my new olive oil and it was delicious!
My experience with the four S’s:
1. Swirl – I swirled a tablespoon of the olive oil in a small clear glass. I didn’t have a blue glass which is customary for master testers in Italy. I found it interesting that color isn’t an indicator of quality and is the reason behind using a blue glass. Fascinating!
2. Sniff – The aroma seemed subtle and not intense.
3. Slurp – The taste was smooth and possibly a little fruity.
4. Swallow – The oil did not leave an aftertaste. However, I did notice a peppery sensation in my throat.
Overall, I was pleased with the quality and taste of Carapelli Premium 100% Italian Extra Virgin Olive Oil. While I’m an amateur olive oil tester, I learned a great deal about olive oil and the rigorous testing that goes into making Italy’s #1 Extra Virgin Olive Oil.
